Operation 'Timelord'
I have just acquired a very nice ornate clock. It is made by the Hamburg and American Clock Co. and dates c. 1900. The drive mechanism was in excellent condition and runs smoothly and keeps excellent time. It has a 14 day strike movement and chimes on the hour and half hour. The case required a little work to it. It was missing the top finial and there was a thick layer of dust and the case was very dull. Here are some 'before' pictures:
You can see the dust in the nooks & crannies
The first thing was to use a soft brush to remove the dust from within the intricate parts of the case. Then using a slightly damp cloth cleaning the case all over. Next a couple of touch up jobs were required. Next the replacement top finial was attached. Now for the hard part! The application of the beeswax polish and the buffing up. It was amazing the difference once the wax was applied. The colour of the wood changed dramatically to a deeper, richer colour and of course with a polish!
You can see the difference here!
I didn't believe that the two small finials were original, as they are too small for the marks on the stands and they are too basic. I therefore replaced them with some larger, more ornate ones as in the picture below.
